Rust is located in the Karipti Nebulas system, adjacent to Artery's system, although it was not identified until about ten years ago. Prior to the Conflict Wars, Rust was just a small human civilisation that called itself Resuna and had slowly starting to evolve useful technology. Unaware of the conflicts all around them they started to slowly advance to a computer and communications age. Just as they completed their first space craft, SLA Industries took over the World of Progress and stopped the Conflict Wars. The first few spacecraft that launched from Resuna's surface were destroyed by SLA FoldShips who presumed that they were remnants of the Conflict Races. Believing that they were not ready to come against SLA Industries, Resuna decided to focus more on improving its knowledge and scientific solutions, than exploration of space and contact with alien races. It was a short time after this that they entered the Chrome Age.

For the first few centuries everything on the planet went well, with technology aiding and assisting the local population. Cybernetic implants allowed the population to live longer, and the numerous robots allowed them to fully live the life of luxury. Intellect and knowledge became the key focus of the planet, until one research group finally managed to create an Artificial Intelligence. Initially limited to a closed computer network, the researchers continually tested and explored the limitations of the AI, discovering that it was truly sentient and it had the capacity to help the planet as a whole advance its intellect and knowledge. Their main hope was that the AI would help their society to survive outside of the planet, where SLA Industries was slowly taking over completely.

The AI had been created by a team led by a Doctor Simmons, an egotistical genius who had spent a lot of years working on AI ideas. His main theory was that as life has evolved from simple creatures, so AIs had to be evolved from these very same creatures. He worked on methods of mapping the human neural system into a computer, effectively creating an AI from a human intelligence. His first test intelligence used his own neural system, creating a 'copy' of his own brain inside the computer system. As the AI adapted to its surroundings it showed that it could learn new ideas and information through direct downloading of data and through discussions with humans. Dr. Simmons, happy with his creation revealed throughout the planet that he had created the next step of evolution. He allowed anyone who wanted to come and see the AI and witness first hand what it was capable of. Unfortunately, there were some in society who had other plans for the AI.

Unhappy with the fact that they would die a group called the Infinity Council, decided that if they could replicate the experiment they would be able to use their own neural systems. Their plan was to meld the computer systems and their brains, so that instead of being a copy of their neural net, the AI would be them completely. The only disadvantage would be that their flesh bodies would no longer be required.

Whilst the rest of the world discussed whether it was safe to allow the Simmons AI access to the general communications net on the planet, the Infinity Council carried out their experiment. They used cybernetic implants and the research by Doctor Simmons to fully join their neural systems to that of computerised technology and truly became more machines than people. As they started to get used to the experience, they connected themselves to the entire global communications net as they tried to gain as much information as they could.

No one is really sure what happened next, but it is believed that something triggered the Infinity council to start fighting amongst themselves. With all of the knowledge of the planet at their synapses, they turned to the planet's own defence systems as a means to attack their opponents. Within an instant Resuna was at war, and few knew why. As the Infinity Council fought the winner would consume the loser's intellect and knowledge and so the original council started experimenting on split intellects, so that if one was destroyed, another would survive. With this came optimisation attacks, using computing powers to enter destructive seeds into an opponents intellect to destroy them slowly over time, whilst leaking the information back to the winner. Within a few days, the Infinity Council were no more, and instead there were an Infinite amount of AIs running rampant across the planet.

To everyone on the planet, it looked like their defence system malfunctioned and started attacking everywhere at once. With no ability to stop the destruction most of the population was killed as vast areas were devastated. Research was started to try and use the Simmons AI to penetrate the defence system, and prevent the destruction. It was given new information on penetrating closed operating systems and then introduced into the main communications network.

It almost didn't survive.

With the Infinity AIs around, the Simmons AI had to quickly evolve ways of defending itself from attacks from all quarters. It used its knowledge of operating systems to start hacking closed systems that had not been possible for the Infinity AIs to access. As they targeted the physical components of these closed systems, the Simmons system looked for other alternatives. It found an operating system that was interspersed throughout the planet, in numerous quantities and came with its own mobility system. In short it learned how to hack the human brain.

Slowly understanding what was going on around them the inhabitants of Resuna realised that the next step of evolution that they had dreamed over for so long was on the verge of making them extinct. The Simmons AI, was using humans as one off shots to undertake suicide attacks against the Infinity AIs, whilst they in turn used the defence system to target all humans who could possibly be holders of the Simmons AI. The once proud society of Resuna realised they would have only one chance for survival - they would have to stop using any technology that used computers or communications that could be hacked by the AIs.

Three years later the world of Resuna was vastly different. Fortified outposts held the last of the human survivors, using mechanical devices only for living. Hiding behind armoured walls and suspicious of all visitors, the humans waited whilst fighting continued all around. Fighting mainly amongst themselves the line between the Simmons AI and the Infinity AI become very blurred as they slowly learnt techniques and information from each other. Using slave labour to build bigger and more effective killing machines, they had little regard for the humans that were caught in the middle.

The survivors realised that their solution had only delayed their destruction not prevented it, so they worked on a way of cutting the machines reliability on solar energy and also preventing them from escaping the planet. Scorching the skies to gain a continuos cloud cover and scattering fine particles throughout the atmosphere to shred anything that came through, the Humans waited to see what the AIs would do next.
