Born to the Overkill

This BPN offers the Operatives some moral dilemmas – are they really the cold corporate killers they are required to be? Can they destroy peoples’ lives in the name of entertainment?

GoreZone is a TV show where an area is allowed to be infested with things from the Cannibal Sectors and (usually fairly new) Contract Killers go in and kill them for sport. Often the Contract Killers turn on each other for extra publicity, and damages are common. The areas chosen for GoreZones are usually residential areas of Downtown, and the residents of these areas are rarely pleased to have their homes turned into combat arenas. In order to minimise civilian casualties, squads of low ranking Operatives are usually sent in just before the show to make sure everybody has evacuated the area, and they generally find a number of residents who need a little more persuasion to leave their homes.

Upon calling the contact the squad will be informed of their task to clear the bottom ten floors of a residential building before the doors are opened and the critters are driven into the block by the ‘beater’ teams. Residents that have voluntarily moved have registered with the admin team, leaving six apartments unaccounted for. The squad has 30 minutes before the entertainment arrives, and another ten after that before the Contract Killers come in. They will be told that they must be out of the building by the time the Contract Killers enter it, and that they are not to kill any of the critters – every bad guy killed off-screen by the Ops is one less to push the ratings up. Any residents refusing to leave are to be persuaded by whatever means necessary. The squad is allowed to offer reluctant occupants a 100u compensation in the event that their home suffers damage, although the paperwork required to recover this money is mind boggling.

The block is a stumpy, rundown concrete eyesore – typical of a Downtown residential building. There are twenty floors above ground and ten below, with three squads clearing the building. Every entrance has been sealed by a reinforced temporary steel wall, bolted across doorways, alleyways, walkways and sewer tunnels. There is one sewer entrance with an automatic door to let in the targets, and the front entrance to the building is cordoned off by another squad and several Shiver APCs. Behind the cordon is the medical team and camera crews. Each of the six occupied apartments will pose a different problem and take a variable amount of time to complete. If the squad splits up they will obviously cover more ground quicker. For argument’s sake it will take an Op one minute to travel between floors. After the 30 minutes have a couple of Carriens run in on whatever some of them are doing. They can drive them away again with indirect gunfire, but if they kill them they will be fined 10c for each one they kill. After 40 minutes they must leave so that the Contract Killers can go about their business unhindered. Any civilians remaining at this time will incur another 20c fine per Op per occupant.

Apartment 1.6 (Floor 1 Apt 6)
Occupied by a 23 year old female who is so wasted on Flip that she can barely respond. They can try to communicate with her for as long as they like, but she will just giggle at them and make inane comments. Physically removing her and dumping her with the Medical Shivers outside the cordon is the only way to clear her.
Duration: 3 mins + negotiation time + time to next location.

Apartment 2.3 (Floor 2 Apt 3)
Occupied by a 27 year old male. He is sat in front of the TV watching Captain Contract, oblivious to the fact his building has been scheduled for Gorezone. He will not answer his door as he is not expecting visitors. If the Ops shout through the door that they are clearing the building he will move, but just banging on it won’t rouse him. If they get him to answer, or if they kick his door in, he will listen to the Ops’ story and believe them, but will be too worried about roaming monsters to leave without an escort. He hasn’t already evacuated because he can’t read and so just threw away the leaflet that was posted through his door.
Duration: Entrance time + 4 mins + time to next location.

Apartment 5.5 (Floor 5 Apt 5)
This apartment is occupied by a 12 year old male and an 8 year old female. They live alone in the apartment after their mother left and father was killed six months ago. A subtle approach is needed here in order to not startle the children, who don’t really understand what is about to happen. Banging on the door and beating it down will cause them to hide, either taking the Ops longer to find them or even causing them to miss them altogether. Negotiation will take a little while to make them understand that they’re safer outside and they will run along unescorted once convinced.
Duration: Negotiation + search time (5 mins for thorough search, 3 for quick but they will not find the kids)

Apartment 7.1 (Floor 7 Apt 1)
No answer from this apartment no matter what is shouted. The occupants are a 24 year old male and a 27 year old female. The female is in labour, and the male knows what is coming but can’t move his partner. If they bash his door in and he knows they are coming he will nervously explain, but if they just barge in without warning he will open fire with his CAF pistol thinking they are a threat. He will not leave his partner unless physically removed, and his partner cannot be moved without endangering her baby. The squad has several options:

• Move the couple by force. This will result in complications in the birth and the medical team will not be impressed. If after the 40 minutes it will also be caught on camera, resulting in negative public image for the Ops involved.
Duration: Negotiation + 19 mins + time to next location.

• Radio the medical team to collect her (assuming they thought to ask for their channel). They will not agree to this as that they won’t make it back in time before the show starts. If the Ops ask for help they can give medical advice over the radio, but she’s not going to give birth any time soon and in order to be of any help they’ll have to stay with her for the duration of the show. As it happens, this is the best course of action for them – at some point in the show a Carriens will burst through the door in blind panic, more than likely to be gunned down by the Ops. He will be followed shortly by a Contract Killer, Makari, who will be none too impressed at them stealing his kill. He will storm towards them with his chainaxe raised, but will stop short when he realises there is a camera crew behind him and a heavily pregnant woman in the room. He spits an insult, turns and leaves. The camera crew linger on the squad slightly longer then follow. The Ops may well fire on Makari as he advances on them, and he will attack if they do. If they kill him they will not be punished – the footage of brave SLA Operatives defending a civilian need is far more useful as propaganda than one Contract Killer. Either way, the press will want an interview afterwards and the Ops will have the opportunity to raise their public image. +1 public image for staying and defending the girl, an extra +1 if a good interview is given (3 or more in interview or communiqué). They will also not be charged the 20c for the couple remaining in the apartment.
Duration: Indefinite

• Ask for advice from their contact or the Shivers downstairs. The Shivers will put them onto the medical team, with the same results as above. The contact will demand that they move the couple as that is their orders or risk failing the BPN. If they do, there will be the same results as the first option. If they ignore his orders the outcome will be the same as the second option but they will not fail the BPN – in fact Mr Desverger will suffer administrative action as a result of his poor judgement.

Apartment 9.5 (Floor 9, Apt 5)
Occupied by a 32 year old male. He knows about GoreZone but doesn’t see why he should leave. He’s armed with a thick chair leg and will attack anyone who tries to forcibly remove him, but this is the only way he is going to leave.
Duration: Negotiation + fight + 20 mins + time to next location

Apartment 10.7 (Floor 10, Apt 7)
This location is empty, the resident has just forgotten to tell the admin team they’re out. If the Ops search the apartment anyway it’ll take 3 mins for a quick search and 5 for a thorough one.
