Atmosphere in the role playing room is the greatest help to games like SLA because they intensify the whole experiance.
Things to work on are;
- LIGHTING, change light bulbs for different moods. Red or strobe for combat, Blue for time down, Orange is best for general role playing & UV for very weird or major events. Never plain white light.
- MUSIC, is a catalyst for emotion. Have a player run the HiFi & play the most relevant music for the situation ( GM to abvise). Have it not to loud that it adversly effects the game.
- SPEAK IN CHARACTER, always, even when asking to pass the Coke, just do it. It may seam stupid but, hey it truely amplifies everything.
- PROPS, for each player. Even just one item that summerises the character the most (like a badge or walking cane). For the GM, have props for the major items, or very least end reward.
- DRESS, like your character to be it. As props, one item of clothing is sufficent. Like just a hat or coat. For the GM it may be much harder but the very least, dress different from usual.
