Mortars

The mortar is a wonderfully simple weapon that’s been around for some time in history and used by small units of troops as a way of giving immediate artillery support to them in the field. It basically lobs an explosive high in the air with another explosive and directly down on where it is aimed using trigonometry to work out an angle of trajectory.

The skill for such a weapon would be Autosupport, as it is technically a support weapon but a basic understanding of Mathematics probably wouldn't go astray either and its up to GM’s if this should provide a bonus to hit.

Mortars can only be fired when stationary, very heavy and they aren't quick to aim.
(4 phases setup- 2 phases to aim)

The weapon must be aimed to fire, un-aimed firing or a miss will result in a loose shell landing with 6 x the normal deviation used in hand grenade scatter.

Once aimed it can be continuously fired on that area.

It takes 4 phases for a shell to hit the ground after it is fired.

Important!

Primary Blast Radius- Targets in this area take this much Primary Blast ID damage, after ID is depleted the Vehicle/Structure is destroyed. In the case of People, Armour takes ID first off the chest, if that is depleted- take DAM in HITS.

Secondary Blast Radius- Targets in this area take this much Primary Blast ID damage, after ID is depleted the Vehicle/Structure is destroyed. In the case of People, Armour takes ID first off the chest, if that is depleted- take DAM in HITS.

Mortars do not make any use of any normal weapon accessories apart from Rangefinder.

TH 058/LFM

Light support mortar
Calibre - 58mm
ROF - 1 every 2 phases
Weight - 30kg
Range - 400m (short range)
Cost - 90000u

The 58mm mortar is designed to be carried and deployed by a single person as a field weapon to support platoon sized units in battle. It comes with a 2000m radar rangefinder.
More or less an antiquated, outmoded field artillery piece in 870SD and being relegated to reservist units, Thresher also seems intent on dropping them in the lap of anyone with the bucks to spare on the open market. While they aren’t exactly the biggest mortar in the universe, they are portable enough to be carried easily by a 2-man fire team and deliver a punishing barrage up to 4km away. They are also a relatively common weapon and ammunition is plentiful, about its only real gripe is that the solid ceramic and heavy steel tube tends to overheat every 40 rounds that go through it and requires cooling. Continued firing will result in a premature detonation halfway down the barrel and then it’s ‘adios’ to the crew.

Light support mortar
Calibre - 90mm
ROF - 1 every phase
Weight - 30kg
Range - 1000m (short range)
Cost – 450,000u

This is a complete step up in technology, a much more dangerous weapon system capable of lobbing a large charge of explosive up to 10km away and its construction is a combination of high impact ceramics, nano-hardened titanium and capable of extended fire support delivery. Unlike the old 058, this animal doesn't need cooling with water as it has excellent heat dispersal properties.

Features a computerised set of servos in the firing plate that can remotely target, aim the mortar tube in half the time it would take to do it manually, it can also be networked with a remote spotter for more accurate bombardment and comes with a 10000m radar rangefinder. Being comparatively new, Thresher are being tight fisted about letting too many of these go up for private sale.

Probably closer to a heavy mortar if it wasn’t for its short range, this beast drops a huge charge of explosive on whatever it lands on and does considerable damage. Pretty much perfect for what it was designed for, lobbing big ugly bombs into trench systems and neighbouring suburbs. DN try to get as many of these things as they can into Mort and are probably the primary reason a lot of the Downtown SHIVER stations pack a lot of extra armour on the roof.

Constructed of a steel tube coated with a high impact honeycomb ceramic with a heavy steel baseplate, it hasn’t got a lot of friends amongst its operators who don’t like the fact that it overheats fairly quickly and due to the protective sleeve around the steel barrel it can be hard to cool down. It comes with a 5000m laser rangefinder, they are cheap though, which is why they didn’t bother with a more robust firing tube. The 10-02 tends to overheat after 30 shots and requires a 3minute cool down time in normal conditions. Continued firing will result in a premature detonation halfway down the barrel and then it’s ‘adios’ to the crew.

Heavy support mortar

Usually fielded by a crew of three, two loaders plus a fire controller and this massive weapon is capable of dropping a 5kg block of high-ex over 8km away, causing immense damage to whatever is underneath. SLA rates this weapon fairly highly on its threat index of REALLY BAD SHIT that it doesn't want going off in its backyard. On the rare occasion it does turn up in an urban environment off a war world or arms shipment it usually is sent in with a team of skilled operators to support a Darknight cell or major offensive. Being battle hardened troops they are about as close to every operative and SHIVER’s worst nightmare. Smart, well trained and with a huge amount of raw cunning, often spending days bringing in detailed recon, ranges and making dedicated fire-charts to inflict the most damage over the shortest period of time.
The tube is constructed completely of high impact ceramics giving the weapon excellent heat dispersal properties and is capable of sustained barrages over a long period of time. It comes with a 55kg base-plate and 8000m laser rangefinder.
