I tend to use Red, Blue and Yellow BPNs as relaxation storylines and the Jade, Green, Grey and White BPNs as more cerebral BPNs.
It means they have to do more work for the higher increases in SCL inherent with JdGyGn BPNs. My rule of thumb was always one 3-4 hour session per 0.1 SCL increase. Red's where the only exception, but then they tended to have a higher death threat and could delay an ongoing BPN (Squad is on a White BPN surveilling (SP?) a place. A Red situation breaks out and they are the only squad in the area that can respond. By the time they have dealt with the Red the target for surveillance has disappeared and the investigation must continue through some other avenue.)
From the MRB:
GREEN - Expeditionary: Mainly out of Mort Central - expedition into the furthest regions of Mort's Cannibal Sectors. Rarely operatives may be offered off-world assignments and explorations.
In my mind Greens almost always allow for a wide variety of Investigation techniques as I always try to establish a purpose to their Expedition, rather than just a walk in a park somewhere. The predominant Green BPN in JNFWoP goes something along the lines of:
Green BPN: To locate and investigate Scav community in Cannibal Sector 1. Determine size and extent of group as well as potential allies. Locate water and food sources and assess potential threat to SLA Industries. Once information is established identify known enemies for possible manipulation as to destruction of Scav community. Report to Shiver Outpost CS195 for Transportation.
An off world BPN may follow along the lines of:
Green BPN: Operative Squad required for protection and additional labour to off-world exploration team. Planet is significant distance away from remote colonies and will require a squad who can survive without assistance. Duration will be one month.
Both BPNs allow for a significant amount of investigative work on the side of the Operatives, for example in the first one, the Operatives would have to investigate the whole area and quickly identify who is and isn't a potential threat if they are going to survive and achieve the other aspects of the BPN. The second one would either be based in an occupied area (ie an inhabited planet that has yet to sign an agreement with SLA) or in a remote area with a threat to the group (for example a DN agent amongst the exploration team). Both would require the Operative team to do investigation work outside of their 'normal' duties to work out what was going on. A good example would be something based on the film the Abyss. You have a group of scientists with one objective, a Military group with another and the Operatives trapped in the middle.
I found when planning BPNs it would be useful to have a handful of Red, Yellow and Blue BPNs that I worked out in advance and I would then offer the group a selection of these plus the Investigation type BPN I wanted them to do. That way they were free to decide if they wanted a BPN requiring concentration or one just for relaxation.
