Mort

Mort Central

Mort Central is the capital city of SLA Industries and covers an area of 2500 square miles. It is here that Mr. Slayer resides in the Spire of Head Office. The Spire is the highest building in the World of Progress and it is at the top that Mr. Slayer is said to look down on all of his creation. The Head Office is where all of the Departmental Heads work from; controlling the departments and sub-departments that form SLA Industries. It is also here where the greatest of the BPN halls lie with Operatives hoping that they'll be noticed by the visiting Department Heads. Surrounding Head Office are thousands of department stores and shopping centres, selling every conceivable item to the hordes of Operatives. Interspersed between these shops is the myriad of restaurants and night-clubs that cater for all tastes. It is also here that the infamous Pit is located, a night-club for Operatives that is beyond comparison with any other throughout the World of Progress. With the majority of Mort Central open 24 hours a day, everything is available as long as you know where to look. The city centre is a bustling hive of visiting Operatives and Shiver patrols. It is here, by Slayers Spire that the worries of DownTown gangs and serial killers can almost be forgotten by the off-duty Operatives.

Uptown

Uptown is the homeland of the richest and most successful Operatives and Department Heads. Here accommodation varies depending on how close it is to Mort Central. The most luxurious accommodation is situated near to Mort Central, where important people can own apartments that cover the whole floor of the apartment building. It is not unheard of for rich Operatives to have enclosed swimming pools and gardens within their apartments, protected from the ceaseless rain by the walls and roofs of the building. Further away from Mort Central the housing is denser but still nice looking and relatively safe. Most of the bottom floors of the apartment blocks have various shops and retail services, so that the Operatives do not have to travel far for life's essentials. Throughout Uptown are numerous BPN halls so that can easily gain their BPNs. As with Mort Central the whole of Uptown is kept safe by Shiver patrols as well as the Dark Finders of Cloak Division.

Suburbia

Suburbia is home to SLA Industries Employees and Operatives. As with Uptown, the nearer the apartments are to Mort Central, the more they luxurious they are. The majority of those close to Mort Central are owned by up-and-coming Operatives as well as important people from the various departments and sub-departments. Cost of living is reasonable here, with New Operatives not finding them too expensive. The middle area of Suburbia is low cost apartments, with denser living conditions. These hold the bulk of SLA Employees as well as Operatives who only want basic facilities. In recent years this has lead to an increase in the number of street gangs, mainly formed by the children of the SLA Employees. On the outskirts of Suburbia, amongst the high density housing blocks are the numerous factories and warehouses that the Departments require. Here SLA Employees work to manufacture the goods that are sold in Uptown and Mort Central. It is also in Suburbia that off world goods are delivered to, before being transported by road in to Uptown. There has also been a steady increase in the number of serial killings in the area, believed to be by people from DownTown, although how they get past the SLA Perimeter is unknown.

SLA Perimeter

Guarded 24 hours a day by Shivers, the SLA Perimeter is a great wall that lies on the boundary between Suburbia and Uptown. Access through these 30m high and 6m wide walls is only possible by those with SCL 11 or higher. A person lacking an SCL card tends to end up under intense interrogation, especially if they are trying to get out of Suburbia. The Shivers that walk the wall are paid a monthly credit bonus due to the level of confrontation they are likely to face. This bonus is seen as poor compensation especially since some of the gangs have started requiring the killing of a Shiver as membership. More on the SLA Perimeter can be found in Gateway 658.

DownTown

The sprawling mass that is DownTown forms the majority of Mort City. It is DownTown where the majority of the inhabitants live, reliant on SLA Industries in every way. Near to the SLA Perimeter is the preferred section of DownTown. It is here that the richest Civilians life as well as the three largest gangs in DownTown; the KrossTown Traffic, the Kiestas and the Johannas. It is this part of DownTown that most of the Civilians look up to as the best place they are likely to get to in their lives. However, few make it. The life-span of most of the civilians ion DownTown is very short. Most of the younger civilians join gangs at an early age as a form of survival. On their own they are weak, but with others they at least have a chance. Most of the older civilians work in the numerous factories and shops that litter DownTown. There is little hope of anything better for the majority of civilians.

DownTown itself is a claustrophobic maze of apartment blocks, collapsed buildings, walkways and underground tunnels. Although you may see your destination, to actually get there may require travelling up and down levels seemingly at random. As buildings are condemned, they are pulled down and built over by new buildings. It is a continuous process of trying to keep away from the depths of DownTown by living as high up as possible. Continuously patrolled by the Shivers and also the Civilian vigilante group Monarch Law Enforcement, danger still lurks around every corner of DownTown.

As DownTown stretches further and further away from Mort Central it becomes more and more an urban jungle. Amongst the ruined factories and abandoned buildings many threats lurk; from robotic Manchines to psychotic serial killers. It is also here that the numerous Soft Companies try to establish themselves by fighting off their competition. As the demand for Black Market items increases, the Soft Companies struggle to find new sources for their goods. An increasing number have turned to hit and run tactics on Shivers and Operatives to gain more equipment. As these attacks increase so do the BPNs issued to destroy the Soft Companies; where one is destroyed, another will quickly fill the void that is left.

Also in DownTown, working in a similar way to the Soft Companies, are the fanatical cults that spread their teachings to anyone who will listen. As they gain more and more followers, they fight an increasingly hostile battle for survival with one another, trying to prove that their road to salvation is right. Their beliefs often bring them into conflict with SLA Industries, as they become more aggressive in their recruitment tactics. The majority of cult leaders rule their followers through fear and suffering, threatening them with death and mutilation if they should ever try and leave. As the cults grow in power, the leaders start to believe that they have been chosen, and that they are invulnerable to the wrath of SLA Industries. As they ambush Operatives and Shivers to prove their strength, SLA Industries is given no choice but to push back with lethal intent.

The Cannibal Sectors

The five outland areas of Mort are the Cannibal Sectors. It is here that SLA Industries planned its greatest projects to improve the lives of those that lived in DownTown. However, with the fall of Salvation tower in 300 SD, the areas were walled in and have become growing abscess on the face of Mort. It is here that all the waste products of Mort Central have ended up; a toxic wasteland that breeds its own nightmares. The Cannibal Sectors are the home-ground of the Carrien as well as other nightmares like the diseased Scavs and the mutated insects. Cannibal Sector One still houses the remains of Salvation Tower, although it is now the home of the immortal Manchine Digger. During the daytime, the Cannibal Sectors are strangely quiet, with only the insect swarms to hamper anyone. However as dusk falls, the inhabitants wake and go on the hunt for their evening meals. Making their way through the sewer lines and buried buildings, these mutations are forever trying to find new ways of getting past the Perimeter walls, so that they may feed on the inhabitants of DownTown. More on the Cannibal Sectors can be found in Lost Town, see the Department of Misinformation for more on Lost Town.
